Add Mom, Dad, Grandma, the college apartment — each with a name, a photo from your contacts, and its own place in the list. Every location is matched against the official warning polygon on its own, so a warning for Grandma is about Grandma’s house, not her county.

Speed

A warning at their door, typically within seconds.

WeatherAlarm listens to the National Weather Service’s real-time wire — the same feed broadcasters use — so a tornado warning is on your lock screen typically within seconds of the forecaster issuing it. And it doesn’t just say “a warning near Mom.” It says the storm is 3.1 miles out, heading toward her, about five minutes away.

After the storm

Then a plain answer: worth checking in, or they came through fine.

When a warning expires, WeatherAlarm replays the storm’s whole life at that exact address — peak winds, rainfall, damage reported nearby — and tells you whether it’s worth a call. It runs on your phone, from the radar itself, and when the honest answer is “they were likely fine,” it says so rather than leaving you to wonder.

Notifications

Settings that fit each person, not one rule for everyone.

Turn off heat advisories for the cabin in Maine. Keep tornado warnings on everywhere. Silence special weather statements globally but leave them on for Dad, because he’s the one who’d want to know. Every location can have its own notification settings — and every alert still shows in the app. This only changes what interrupts you.

Is their power out? Is the heat dangerous for them, or just hot? How high will the river get? Did the warning just get worse?

Know when their power is out

Where a utility publishes street-level outages, the card says their own address looks affected. Elsewhere it says how much of the area is dark, always naming the utility — and says nothing rather than implying the lights are on.

Heat that’s dangerous for that person

NWS HeatRisk accounts for how unusual the heat is for that place and time of year, and how long it lasts. Ninety degrees somewhere used to it isn’t ninety where it never happens.

How high the river will get

During a flood warning, the nearest NOAA gauge and its forecast crest — the peak the Weather Service expects, when, and whether that clears flood stage.

What changed on an update

A re-issued warning says what actually changed — hail or wind revised, the expiration moved, a tornado now observed — worst first, so you aren’t re-reading the whole bulletin to find it.

The EPA index colour-coded like AirNow, plus a health note that accounts for smoke in the area even when the sensor itself still reads clean.

I’m one developer, not a company. WeatherAlarm started on a phone call with my mom during a severe-weather event: her kids are spread across several states, and she was calling each of us, one at a time, to check in. She was the one trying to keep track of everyone, and she had no tool for it. So I built one.

It’s the app I wanted for my own family — watching over the people I love wherever they are, without ads, without selling anyone’s data, and without a paywall between a family and a tornado warning. That’s the whole idea, and it’s why it’s free.
